Most common keratin mistakes | How to avoid damaging your hair

Exposure Time

In this post, we explain the most common mistakes with keratin treatments. You can also see the 11 most frequently asked questions about keratin here.

All types of keratin treatments have their own timing and procedures , and many people think that waiting longer will make their hair straighter, but that's not the case. The type of straightening used must also be taken into account.

Each brand has its exact time for each type of hair , so we have to respect that time, it's okay if it goes a few minutes, but not too many, because perhaps fine hair wouldn't last long and would end up damaging the hair.

Product Application

Applying too much keratin to your hair doesn't guarantee a better straightening . It's best to apply the right amount to each strand, placing a small amount about one centimeter from the roots and combing downward until the keratin has absorbed all of your hair. A fine-tooth comb will achieve the best results.

Apply heat to speed up exposure

I recommend NOT doing so. We understand that each person has a different metabolism . Let me give you an example: some people have highlights ready in 10 minutes, but others take much longer to achieve the desired color. So if we apply heat to all of them, the exposure time will exceed the limit for some of them and end up causing their hair to burn.

It's best to let the keratin do its normal work, without applying anything, no plastic, no aluminum foil, and certainly not heat caps.

Ironing too much

Straightening is the most important process for straightening . If you're going to get a keratin treatment ( we explain how to do it step by step here ) and don't have a special flat iron, your straightening might not turn out perfectly. People think, "I don't have a powerful flat iron, so I'll just set the temperature to maximum and do a few passes." That's really bad for your hair.

My hair is not straight. Should I apply keratin again?

Many people, when they see that their hair isn't straight, first think about applying another keratin treatment (to straighten it even more). This can be done with some keratin treatments, but not all. The normal and most recommended approach is to wait the time indicated by each brand, which is usually 3 months.
Keratin straightening treatments are known in Brazil as PROGRESSIVE STRAIGHTENING , which means that the hair usually gradually adapts to a straight shape.

After a while, if you're doing keratin treatments every 3 months, you'll see the difference in your hair.

I also want to remind you that Keratin straightening is not a Japanese straightening treatment. Many people mistakenly think it will leave your hair 100% straight, but that's not the case. Keratin straightening makes it easier to style . Keratin will only be effective when you apply heat to your hair. This means that when you wash your hair, you have to dry it with a good brush to achieve the straightness and shine.
